ABOUT GARY E BROOKS

Gary Brooks was born and raised in Amelia, Ohio. Childhood painting excursions with his father sparked Gary’s desire to pursue fine arts at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Architecture, and Art where he earned a BFA in painting and Masters in Art Education. While at UC, Gary worked as a studio artist for internationally acclaimed wildlife artist John A. Ruthven. His experience working with this master solidified Brooks’ love of careful observation and high detail in his own watercolor and egg tempera paintings.

Brooks has worked at his craft for more than forty years using the spontaneity of watercolor, dry brush, and egg tempera to capture the essence of his world. Thematically, Brooks paints the things he knows. Midwestern landscapes of rustic barns, fallow fields, and the tools of an earlier era inform much of his oeuvre. His watercolors are imbued with personal meaning, depicting everyday objects once owned by people in places and times he cherishes. Brooks returns to these familiar locales to capture the subtle effects of time, weather, light, and shadow to tell  stories that resonate with many collectors.

Brooks’ award-winning artwork can be found in homes and offices throughout the United States. Solo exhibition venues include The Zoner and White Oak Galleries, with group show participation in national juried exhibitions. Associate memberships include the Pennsylvania/American, Watercolor Societies, and the Society for Casein and Acrylic Painters. He is a signature member of both the Ohio and Kentucky Watercolor Societies. Currently, he teaches watercolor at Arts Connect in Cincinnati, Ohio.
