Do you want to learn to paint watercolors with rich shadows, vibrant colors, and luminous clean whites?
Join Andrea Walker, the First Place winner of our 2025 GCWS Annual Show, for a two-day guided painting watercolor workshop! Andrea will teach you a skillful process for creating realistic watercolor paintings and break down key techniques in an accessible way. You will also learn how to:
- Create rich darks that aren’t overworked or opaque
- Mix colors for a harmonious finished piece
- Create the illusion of depth and three dimensional form that makes your painting “pop”
- Successfully paint complex subjects with ease by using layers
- Balance hard and soft edges to achieve realism
- Bring textures to life!
Andrea will guide you through each step, from the big washes that create the foundation of your painting all the way to the finishing details that she is most known for. You will leave class not only with our finished class painting, but also an enhanced toolset for your own paintings.
All levels are welcome!
Participants bring their own art supplies, including paper, brushes, and watercolor paint, for use during the workshop.

ARTIST BIO
Andrea Walker is a nationally recognized professional artist who has won national and international awards for her realistic watercolor paintings. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design and her work has been displayed in New York City and Paris with groups including the American Watercolor Society, the American Artists Professional League, and The Art of Watercolour magazine. Andrea has led workshops and demonstrations across the US and Canada and has online classes available on Patreon. She has also worked with major brands including Holbein, Legion Paper, General Pencil, Blick Art Materials, and Opus Art Supplies.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My artistic approach to contemporary realism incorporates attention to detail, strong design, traditional techniques, and a realistic rendering of light and texture through many layers. A common thread throughout my work is intricate, thoughtful detail that is unveiled as the viewer spends more time with the painting. My compositions and designs focus on bold, dominant shapes and trailing pathways of light and color leading through the piece. I use strong lighting to help emphasize form and bring textures to life. Along with form and texture, energetic colors are also used throughout my watercolor paintings, and I specifically look for subjects with interesting, varied colors. While my artwork is, in part, a reflection of the objects themselves, my work has much more to do with my inner world as a person. In a way, my watercolors are more like a self portrait than
a still life. All of my work embodies tight, detailed realism with an emphasis on craftsmanship and refinement. This is an outward expression of my finding order and beauty in the chaos of life. My watercolors are a balance of technical acumen and the much more personal depths where that originates.

There will be a 1-hour lunch break each day.
Tuition does not include lunch. There are several restaurants in the area if you would like to go out for lunch. There is a refrigerator available if you would like to bring your own lunch.

Why do GCWS members get a discount?
Members are loyal supporters of the Society and receive discounts for a variety of programs, including our Annual Watercolor Show. If you become a member now, you too can receive this discount!
Is lunch served during the workshop?

What is your cancellation policy?
By completing your registration transaction, you agree to accept the following cancellation policy: Cancellation requests need to be emailed directly to info@greatercincinnatiwatercolorsociety.org. You will receive a full refund if you cancel at least 1 week in advance. There is NO refund for any reason if you cancel within 1 week prior to or during the class. There are no refunds for missed days, early departure, or no-shows. If GCWS or the instructor cancels the class, you will receive a full refund of the tuition.
What is your promotional policy?
GCWS reserves the right to take and use photographs, video, and/or quotes from workshops, instructors, or participants for use in advertising or promotional materials without notice or compensation.
